KNU Statement on Baseless Accusation by SPDC and Call for Nationwide Ceasefire
February 24, 2011
We, the Karen National Union (KNU), reject totally the baseless accusation by the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), the military dictatorship of Burma, that the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) troops fired heavy weapons at a lemon farm owned by U Zaw Lay Htoo in Shwegyin Township, Bago Division, at about 9 am on 17 February, leaving four farm workers dead and three wounded.
The SPDC further asserted that the KNU was undermining the peace of the State, and committing destructive acts causing death and injury. The world knows well that it is the SPDC policy to allow its troops to shoot and kill innocent civilians, burn villages and farms, torture suspects, commit rape of women etc. in all the KNU areas. In urban areas, the SPDC imprisons people asking for human rights and freedom, sells narcotic drugs freely and deliberately to impoverish the population.
The latest accusation is just a smoke screen for the military dictatorship to build up an offensive against the KNU and the KNLA, which is the armed wing of the KNU. Our troops have few heavy weapons and unlike the SPDC, they never deliberately fire on civilian targets.
To help solve Burma ’s problems, we have repeatedly urged the Burmese regime to respond to calls by the United Nations General Assembly, United Nations Security Council, European Union , United States of America and others, to engage in genuine tripartite dialogue with the opposition forces, for positive change. However, the regime refuses and instead continues to target our civilian populations for military attack.
We, the KNU together with the other ethnic nationality forces, are ready for dialogue in order to resolve Burma ’s political problems through political means. We call upon the international community, and peace and justice loving countries around the world to support actively the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to secure a nationwide ceasefire, leading to meaningful and inclusive dialogue to achieve national reconciliation and a return to democracy and normalcy in our country.

မိန္းမ ၃၉ ေယာက္ယူထားတဲ႔ ျမန္မာႏြယ္ဘြားတေယာက္
Man with 39 wives
Family fortunes ... Ziona Chana and his wives
TALK about one BIG happy family.
The "Chanas" at No9 comprises 181 members - and none of them is on benefits.
Dad Ziona has 39 wives, 94 children, 14 daughters-in-law and 33 grandchildren - all living together under one roof.
Believed to be the biggest family in the world, home is a huge, 100-room, four-storey house where they sleep in dormitories.
And even then they have to go top-to-tail to fit.
Handily, head of the family, Ziona, 67, also runs his own sect - which allows multiple marriage.
He says he feels blessed to have so many of his brood living with him, adding: "Today I feel like God's special child.
"He's given me so many people to look after.
"I consider myself a lucky man to be the husband of 39 women and head of the largest family."
All the men of the family work as carpenters and Ziona says proudly: "We don't want any help from the government."
The super-dad once married ten women in a year.
'Have you finished in the bathroom yet?' ... the Chana house with its 100 rooms dominates the village

Global Day of Action for 34 Resistance Fighters From Burma in Indian Jail
by Karen Community Association UK on Friday, 11 February 2011 at 22:29
38 organisations in 18 countries are taking part in a global day of action in support of 34 resistance fighters from Burma who are currently being held in an Indian jail. The 34 are threatened with deportation back to Burma, where they would very likely face arrest, torture and imprisonment.
The thirty-four were arrested 13 years ago, on 11th February 1998, on Landfall Island, by the Indian Military. They appear to have been tricked by a rogue Indian Military intelligence official, who had told them they could land there with the permission and support of the military. Although initially accused of gun-running, these charges were dropped, and last year a plea bargain was agreed in which they were told that each of them had to pay a six-thousand rupee fine, and given a three year sentence, which has already been served while waiting for, and during, the trial.
These thirty-four resistance fighters never intentionally broke any Indian law. They thought they were in India with the permission of the Indian government. For thirteen years they face being given long prison sentences in India for a crime they did not commit. Now, even though their case is over, and they have paid their fine and served the time they were given, they are still in jail.
Even worse than still being denied their freedom, the Indian government has threatened to deport them back to Burma. The thirty-four come from two ethnic nationalities in Burma, they are Arakanese and Karen. Both of these ethnic groups face persecution from the dictatorship ruling Burma. As members of two banned organisations, the National United Party of Arakan, and the Karen National Union, they would face arrest, torture and imprisonment if they were forced to return to Burma.
“The continuing detention of these thirty-four resistance fighters is appalling and in breach of human rights,” said Mary Hla, Campaigns Officer at Burma Campaign UK. “The Indian government should release them immediately without any conditions. The UNHCR should immediately recognise the 34 as qualifying as refugees and seek a third country for them to be resettled to.”
The thirty-four briefing is available at:
Actions are taking place in: United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, Czech Republic, Austria, France, Norway, Germany, Sweden, South Africa, Japan, South Korea, India, Bangladesh, and Thailand.

Burma benefits as UK targets aid money on fight for democracy
By Andrew Buncombe, Asia Correspondent
Monday, 14 February 2011
British aid to Burma – the poorest country in South-east Asia – is to be sharply increased in an effort to help the country's most beleaguered and to support the struggle for democracy.
A review carried out at the behest of Andrew Mitchell, the international development secretary, has concluded the £32m currently spent in Burma should increase to a total of £185m over the next four years. Officials say the money will target grass roots organisations and other partners working there and not to the military junta.
"Britain has not forgotten the people of Burma, who have been silenced for too long. They have suffered under decades of dreadful economic mismanagement and human rights abuses as well as the ongoing threat of civil war and famine," Mr Mitchell said in a statement. "The poorest in Burma must have a voice. We will build up civil society, local charities, village groups and their representatives to push for change."
While the Coalition says the total budget for international aid budget is to be increased by 37 per cent in real terms, Mr Mitchell said last summer that he believed the money needed to be targeted more effectively. It is expected that the aid budgets to many countries will be sharply reduced or scrapped. India, a country where the economy is growing by more than 8 per cent and where Britain currently annually spends £280m, is one of those places where some believe aid should be halted. In contrast, the minister announced earlier this month that aid to Somalia is to be tripled, from £26m in 2010-11 to £80m in 2013-14.
The review, the full results of which are expected to be announced later this month or in early March, found that in Burma at least 16 million people live in desperate hardship. The junta, which recently oversaw controversial elections for a largely toothless parliament, spends just a tiny amount on services healthcare and education.
Officials said DFID will work with a growing number of community groups and aid organisations working "to promote a peaceful and democratic future for Burma from the bottom up" to try to address some of this shortfall. In particular, money will be targeted towards improving maternal health and reducing the threat of malaria, estimated to affect more than 8 million Burmese. In addition, they believe the money will support 225,000 children through primary school, help increase food production for 200,000 people and provide micro-finance to another 100,000. Money lenders in the country currently charge interest rates of up to 200 per cent.
The increased funding has been welcomed by campaign groups, which had been urging the department not to cut back on spending. They said, however, Britain could do more. "We would also like to see them be more creative in ensuring aid reaches the most needy, and not just channel large grants through UN agencies which face restrictions on their operations, especially in ethnic [minority] areas," said Mark Farmaner of Burma Campaign UK. "DFID should significantly expand democracy promotion work via groups in exile which manage underground networks, as well as civil society in country, as there are strict limitations on what can be done in country."
* The Australian publisher of an English-language newspaper in Burma has been arrested in what an associate suggested was a business dispute. The Myanmar Times editor-in-chief, Ross Dunkley, was in Rangoon's Insein jail on charges of violating a section of the immigration law on overstaying a visa. The associate said his arrest coincided with "tense negotiations" with his Burmese business partners.

A Sad Valentine’s Day for Karen People

By SAW YAN NAING Monday, February 14, 2011
It was on the evening of Feb. 14, 2008, that two men carrying a gift basket of fruit walked up to the home of Mahn Sha, a prominent and well-respected Karen leader, in the town of Mae Sot, Thailand, and gunned him down.
“Good evening, uncle,” one man said in Karen before firing the first shot. Then another gunman also shot him repeatedly as he fell from his chair.
They rushed back to a black Hilux Vigo pickup truck and drove away. By then, Mahn Sha was already dead from multiple bullet wounds.
He was killed on the balcony where he often rested after lunch, leaving behind a distraught family. His death was also a great loss for Karen people around the world, especially for those who belonged to the Karen National Union (KNU), one of Asia’s oldest armed resistance groups.
Mahn Sha, who had served as the KNU's general secretary, was highly respected not only by the Karen, but also by Burmese opposition groups. He was considered a wise leader because he often spoke of the need for inclusiveness to bring all democratic forces and ethnic minority groups together in their struggle against military rule.
He died at the age of 64, survived by two daughters and two sons, including one adopted son.
